Overview

This highly practical digital skills development series is designed for executives, technical and business professionals as well as students and new graduates who aim to be future entrepreneurs or digital innovators in major organisations or in the start-up sector.

You will learn the core practical skills to build websites, implement these using popular cloud computing solution stacks, and manage Cyber-security functions. In addition, you will learn Python programming, and apply data analytics with machine learning models. You also have the option to improve your communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on career acceleration and building portfolios. You will be an essential asset to building innovative digital businesses.

Entry Requirements

No prior programming or analytic skills required, although prior undergraduate or equivalent credit gained for recognised learning would be beneficial.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of all Modules students will:

Module Breakdown

Module 1 - Web Design and Development (WDAD01)

Aim

During this module, students will be creating and converting design files into HTML and CSS code. Further skills to propose and use web application frameworks currently in demand and used across industry will be covered. Front-end design frameworks, as well as back-end server-side script creation, will be covered. Students will learn the necessary skills to create 1-page applications as well as loading projects to a basic web server for hosting and search engine listing.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate, create and demonstrate design and development of websites using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Web Frameworks.
  2. Design, develop and implement front-end design and back-end functionality.
  3. Plan and incorporate content management, hosting and deployment solutions.
  4. Conceptualise frameworks, user and industry requirements.
  5. Understand career pathways and plan ongoing education.

Module 2: Cloud Architecture and Cyber-Security (CACS02)

Aim

During this module, students will be planning, evaluating, and implementing the key concepts and services offered by the three major cloud hosting providers; Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure and Google Cloud. Students will construct virtual machines, databases and object storage repositories as well as a consolidated assembly of the various cloud services to form a holistic solution. Further work on container orchestration services, Kubernetes, and the use of Load Balancers and Auto-Scaling will be covered.

Furthermore, students will evaluate the importance of Cyber-security, and investigate the technical and non-technical foundations of security principles as well as practical security in the cloud. Lastly, students will develop and challenge a capture the flag scenario with red and blue team attack and defence exercises with security retrospective.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Formulate and implement cloud hosting infrastructure using Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure and Google Cloud.
  2. Assemble and implement virtual machines, virtual networks with logging and monitoring in a secure manner.
  3. Plan and incorporate relational, document and key-value databases + File and Disk Storage.
  4. Construct and configure load balancers, auto-scaling and containers.
  5. Investigate the technical and non-technical foundations of Cyber-security principles.
  6. Develop and challenge, attack and defence exercises, with Cyber-security introspection.

Module 3: Data Analytics and Machine Learning (DAML03)

Aim

Students will learn Python programming fundamentals - with a focus on data science. Topics such as algorithms, data structures, dictionaries, modules, data processing and file handling will be covered. In addition, data import, manipulation and visualisation principles with a focus on machine learning will be presented.

Furthermore, students will design and implement Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence by fitting and building models with real-world data. Students will apply data pre-processing, model real data, and develop and train Machine Learning models. Lastly, students will create models using worked or personal projects.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Design and develop software programs and scripts using Python programming.
  2. Conceptualise the main aspects of Machine Learning.
  3. Plan and incorporate data pre-processing and model real data.
  4. Develop and train Machine Learning models using supervised and unsupervised techniques.
  5. Plan and incorporate Machine Learning models on real-world projects.

Module 4: Professional Skills & Industry Portfolio (PSIP04)

Aim

During this module, students will expand their professional skills, and build their industry portfolios. There will be career coaching and improved professional visibility and presence for the modern technology fields. A focus on individual presentation and interview skills will be taken, with guided activities towards career advancement.

Students will work on consolidating their knowledge in the fields of Web Development, Cloud Architecture, Cyber-security and Machine Learning by working on portfolio building projects. Projects will be predetermined, supplied by students, or implemented as a capstone Industry Hackathon.

  1. Evaluate and identify areas for professional skills improvement.
  2. Author professional profiles for an improved professional presence on digital platforms.
  3. Create and demonstrate a consolidated digital skills project portfolio.
  4. Interpret and transmit knowledge, ideas and skillset to a broader audience.
